On Tuesday the Seniors Team visited Toft keen to do well after the whitewash experienced last year. However Toft have not been beaten at home in over three years and their course is always a challenge for visitors accustomed to somewhat flatter terrain. Although some games were close the best the visitors could muster was a solitary half point from wily campaigners Terry Loomes and Arthur Dethick. The detailed results are as shown below: Match v Toft
On Thursday heavy showers dampened the enthusiasm of even the most optimistic members although some did console themselves with a trip to the nineteenth hole. The summer competitions are now well under way with the prospect of some interesting tussles to come in the final stages. In the Singles Knockout competition Geoff Emery and David Brailsford are through to the semi-finals for the first time. Geoff will play either Alistair Scott or Bill Collins while David will play Stewart Picton, David Duffin or Bob Billinger. In the Doubles Knockout competition there are three long established pairings and one new pairing through to the semi-finals. Mike Frankish & Dick Wray will play Alan Kydd & Fred Shorrock while the holders Frank Copsey & Keith Barratt will play Tony Whiting & David Simmonds. In the Order of Merit competition after eleven events the leaders are very much together bunched together with no one able to open up much of a lead. Dick Wray (31 points), Nigel Coombs (29 points) and Bill Ansell (28 points) occupy the first three places but there are nine members with twenty points or more who are still in contention.

On Tuesday the August Monthly Stableford competition was played alongside the Veterans Cup, a competition introduced last year for the over 75’s. Of the 65 entrants for the Stableford eleven declared their eligibility for the more senior event and our congratulations go to Frank Copsey who topped the field with 38 points to win the competition. Rumour has it that Frank is having to get the builders in to extend his trophy cabinet once again.
In the Stableford Division 1 Ian Barron was the clear winner with 42 points ahead of John Mason and Keith Barratt who had to be separated by countback. In Division 2 Geoff Osborne and Colin Brown underwent a similar experience with Geoff just getting the nod to take first place. Gill Glenister put in a very good round for the second week in succession to take third place on countback from Richard Simmons. Geoff Osborne and Ian Barron won a bottle of red and a bottle of white respectively in the nearest the line and nearest the pin competitions.

On Wednesday the Seniors Team entertained their visitors from Boston hoping to reverse an away defeat earlier in the season. However in an enjoyable match the visitors played well and deserved their 4½ games to 3½ victory over the home side. The detailed results are as shown below:

The Seniors Team members finally got into their stride this week with a couple of home victories. On Monday they got the better of the visitors from South Kyme with a 5 games to 3 victory and on Wednesday they went one better with a convincing 6 games to 2 win over Belton Woods. The detailed results are as shown below:

This year so far some forty members have represented the Seniors in inter-club matches and have nearly always enjoyed the experience. The team have played 15 games winning eight and losing seven with the most successful players being Ray Taylor (75%), Keith Barratt (67%) and Tony Whiting (67%). So now you know whom to follow into the clubhouse for rollup competitions!
On Tuesday the format of the day was the Yellow Peril Stableford competition which attracted 51 members with some good scores being achieved. Veteran Jock Wallace showed members twenty years his junior how the game should be played with an eagle three on the par 5 sixteenth hole to inspire his team to a winning total of 86 points.

On Tuesday the Seniors fielded a strong team for their visit to local rivals Burghley Park but the home team’s local knowledge proved decisive as they recorded a comfortable victory by 6 games to 2. The detailed results are as follows:
Back at Rutland County there was a good turn out of 42 members for an individual Stableford competition. The weather conditions were somewhat benign and several members took advantage of the absence of the Handicap Secretary with some very good scores. First place went to Gill Glenister with an outstanding total of 45 points just ahead of Richard Simmons on 44 points and the evergreen Mike Reynolds with 43 points .
On Thursday the format of the day was the infrequently used 3-2-1 variation of the Stableford competition which resulted in low scores for some of the 13 groups in contention. Vice-Captain John Mason ably assisted by Nick Carter and Rob Elliott produced the best combined score of the day with a creditable 77 points. Terry Loomes, Frank Copsey and Bob Goddard had to be content with second place on 76 points.
